Cuba Glimpses - April 2015
This selection of images portrays the diverse nature of Cuba. Taken over a 10 day workshop extending from Havana to Spiritus Sanctus, Trinidad and several rural and farmland locations, I was firstly struck by the happy and friendly nature of Cubans despite their often meager conditions. Interestingly, they most always seemed very happy to have their photo taken.
Cuba provides avid photographers the opportunity to see a wide tapestry of architecture, people, textures and colours. Classical architecture and interiors speak of prosperous times when Havana was a thriving economic center for trade, commerce and tourism. Despite difficult conditions, ingenuity and enthusiasm is evident everywhere, and there is hope that better times will come.
These images capture both the best and worst aspects of Cuba. Some give evidence of its former beauty and grandeur, others speak of people striving for improvement and many show the stark reality of people living in a very modest, but passably livable circumstance. In our travels, I saw no evidence of the truly destitute or poor – everyone seems to get by reasonably well.
Many images are included not for their photographic artistry, but more for their “interest” appeal.
